Staffordshire County Council has announced that Stafford Household Waste Recycling Centre will be closed on Friday 2 May following a fire on-site.

The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday 1 May and is believed to have been caused by a lithium-ion battery placed in the small electrical appliances bin.

Thanks to the swift response from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue, the fire was quickly brought under control. The site will now undergo safety checks before reopening.

In a statement shared via Facebook, the council said:

“Thank you to the team at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue who put out the fire quickly.
The site will be closed tomorrow (Friday 2 May) while we make sure it’s safe for you to use.
We’ll let you know as soon as it’s open.
Thank you for your understanding.
Please share this with others who may need to know.”

Residents are urged to avoid visiting the site until further notice and to keep an eye on the Staffordshire County Council Facebook page for updates.
